Cherry blossoms, also known as sakura, are pink flowers that grow from ornamental cherry trees, and they are the national flower of Japan. There, you will find cherry blossoms all over the place. Different ones grow throughout different seasons there, but here, bright abundant flowers like cherry blossoms are most prominent during the springtime. We have the Japanese to thank for many of the cherry blossoms we have here in the U.S. The flower is so important to them, they have celebrated the blooming of cherry trees for centuries. In 1912, Japan gifted our country with several cherry blossom trees that they planted around the capital. It was a gift that symbolizes friendship between our two countries.

The gift of cherry blossoms means a lot considering how important they are to the Japanese people. For them, cherry blossoms symbolize a time of renewal and the fleeting nature of life. This is because of how short a lifespan these flowers have. They are the most beautiful around two weeks after they bloom, and do not last for much longer after that. These trees will spend most of their time being green, and so it’s a big deal when the gorgeous, pink flowers are out in full display.

In Japanese culture, people have cherry blossom parties to celebrate the flowers. They have these parties with friends, family, and even work colleagues. They have barbecues and enjoy food and drinks directly under the cherry blossoms outside. This tradition is called “hanami,” which means “watching blossoms.” In Japan, you’ll find cherry blossom trees crowded with people who are out to celebrate.

Cherry blossoms are not as popular of a phenomenon here, but you can always celebrate their beauty on your own! You might not easily come across them in your town, but you can always surround yourself with their image. Cherry blossoms make for the perfect spring decor.
