What Makes Spooky Season So Great?

In October, it gets darker sooner, which gives everything the right backdrop to create an eerie vibe. The trees change color and surround the atmosphere in an amber glow. The coffee shops are also bringing back flavors that we wait all year round for! Pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon are back! These flavors serve as a backdrop for the season and make us feel more connected to it, just as the sight of a pumpkin does. 

There are creepy decorations everywhere, from schools to storefronts and hospitals! So many places will remind you of the upcoming holiday with their pumpkins, skeletons, and gnomes, and so many more ominous characters. And then the day comes where you can dress up like a strange creature and go out in public! It will be totally normal and most people will be dressed up at some point. Dress like that any other season and people will probably run away from you. That’s the beauty of the spooky season!

When you’re heading to a celebration wearing a zombie costume while sipping a pumpkin spice latte, you’ll feel an amazing sense of joy that you cannot get just any time of the year. The time leading up to that is also just as fun! Every network will be showing all their best horror movies and Halloween-themed show episodes. You get to snuggle up under blankets by yourself or with your friends as you have a month-long horror marathon. And we can’t forget about the candy! Halloween is a great time to indulge in sweet treats, and you don’t have to go trick-or-treating to do it! Stores will be stocked with Halloween-themed treats. Some of these treats only come out this season. You can have some candy corn just because. It’s not everyone’s favorite, but it's in season!

Carved Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins is one of the greatest joys of the Halloween season. What’s not to love about picking out a great pumpkin and carving your own decorations into it? This job will need you to use a lot of your creativity to execute it well. If you are brimming with creative ideas, this is a great opportunity to show off your amazing skills. Even if you are not so artistically inclined, this task will draw the creativeness out of you. You get to feel a sense of accomplishment whenever you look upon your self-carved pumpkin. 

Your jack-o-lantern will be in great company. You will see these everywhere during the month of October. Lots of homes will have one out front. A jack-o-lantern is a quintessential Halloween image. You will see them everywhere. You’ll see real ones and you’ll see images of them. Why not have this popular symbol of the spookiest month of the year in your dorm room?

The first step is to choose the right pumpkin. Pumpkin patches everywhere are filled with pumpkins waiting to be snatched up. Going to a pumpkin patch can be a fun trip to take with your friends and roommates. Grocery stores will also have them on display. Large boxes filled with pumpkins will be in prominent grocery store areas for you to take home. You can even order one or more from the grocery store online. And then it is up to you to decorate it how you want to. You can carve the classic scary face seen on jack-o-lanterns all over, or you can do something different. You can carve anything into your pumpkin. Give it a sweet, friendly face or give it the scariest face that your friends have ever seen!

Halloween Balloons

Balloons are always a wonderful and festive decoration. They are great for birthday parties, weddings, parades, and just about every fun celebration there is! Use them for your halloween decorations and have your dorm room look party ready, (even if you don’t ever plan on throwing a party there). Balloons are great for adding the kind of ambiance you need. There are different styles available for any occasion, and with some DIY tricks, you can make plain ones suit any occasion. 

DIY Halloween balloons do not take very much effort, but can yield amazing results. All you will need to make them are plain, cheap balloons, and good-quality permanent markers. You have the freedom to create any type of spooky design you can think of. One of the best design choices to create a spooky vibe are scary faces. You can give your balloons happy expressions or mean ones. You can make them look like ghosts or skeletons, or like children or beasts. You can try using various marker colors to draw on different effects, like blood or rot. 

You can get these balloons at a dollar store, where you can also get them filled up with helium. But that is not entirely necessary. It is easy to blow them up yourself and then stick and tie them to different surfaces to give the appearance of floating.

Markers will also work for this task. Use anything that will create a dark silhouette effect. To create a lifesize outline of a person, you can have a friend lie down onto your blank canvas and trace around their frame. You can add whatever details you want to the image from there. 

Halloween Luminaries

Luminaries are a fun way to light up our nights during the spooky season. They are great for showing off your Halloween decorations even when it's dark. As soon as you turn off your lights, your luminaries will light up your bedroom with all the creepy images across them. It will add a really cool touch to your room, and depending on how bright they are, you can use them as primary lighting when it's dark out. They will be perfect for lighting on those horror movie nights. 

Luminaries are an easy decoration to create on your own. You don’t actually need very much to do this aside from pieces of paper, markers, and a light source. You can draw any design that comes to your mind or even trace some from images that you find online. Weird faces, scary creatures, and even shipwrecks can look great on one of these makeshift luminaries. You will need to use dark markers for the prominent features you want to show off when you flip off the light switch. To have them light up inside, place a really small light source, like a tea light, inside of a jar. You will place your paper creation right onto the jar, wrap it around, and stick it on. It will look a lot more complicated than it really is when you have it fully set up.
