Trying to settle on the dorm look that will best reflect who you are as a person can be incredibly frustrating. If you’re someone who’s thought about how you might decorate your room and then thought about it some more - only to continuously draw a blank - you might want to think about current trends and how they fit into your perception of yourself. Trends may be ephemeral, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t be long-lasting for you personally. We’re here to help you out.

These are some of the trendiest dorm room looks we’ve seen for this fall:

Not All That Glitters Is Gold
There’s nothing like a little shine and shimmer to really make your dorm room stand out from the rest of the pack. You may think that the most obvious choice for a lustrous theme to bring to your dorm room this fall might be gold, but that’s not your only option. Where the sun is usually golden, the moon is silver - and silver might be just the trend you need to bring to your dorm bedding this year.

Here, they’ve chosen to add metallic silver to their decor sparingly, but you can choose to add as much or as little as you’d like to. They’ve kept a grey and white palette to help the silver accents to blend in seamlessly, mostly incorporating the actual shiny pop into accent items such as their decorative pillows or the holographic stars they’ve hung up on the wall. If you look closely, you can see that the headboard they’ve placed behind their pillows also has a slight silver sheen to it.

Fluff It Up

Faux fur is the epitome of coziness and comfort. Not only does it add an extra layer of warmth to whatever material it’s been sewn onto, but it also adds some texture - both physically and visually - to the dorm room look you’ve created. Make your room pop with some voluminous material this fall, and give yourself a soft and grounding texture for you to run your fingers through when you’re stressed while you’re at it!

Here, they’ve kept the base of their bedding fairly simple by using some basic cotton for their sheets and comforter, but they’ve added in lots of faux fur for some extra texture in the form of their pillows and throw blanket. Some of their fuzzy pillows are decorative, but they’ve also found a faux fur sham to cover their standard pillow, which adds even more texture to the bedding. On the floor, they’ve added an ottoman covered in fur, as well as a furry rug to round out the look.

Daydream in White
Fashion, decor, and dorm rooms centered around a single color are really in right now, so if you’re looking for a trend you can get on board with, you’ll definitely want to take a look at some dorm room looks that stick to one color. If you’re someone who can keep your room impeccably clean, you’ll definitely want to think about going with an all white look. Crisp, clean, and the perfect way to make you feel like you’re living on top of a cloud, this is the perfect trend to follow.

Everything Was Blue

If you’re seriously considering going along with the trend of using a single color palette for the entire theme of your dorm room decor but you’re afraid you won’t be able to keep a white room clean, blue is a great alternative! Still just as dreamy, you can easily combine different hues of the same blue you’ve chosen to add a little depth to your dorm room theme so that it doesn’t feel like you’re drowning in one color.
Here, they’ve stuck to a fairly light blue for their bedding, keeping standard white sheets underneath some a blue and white striped comforter with matching pillows. They’ve added some darker sapphire blue with one of their accent pillows, and all along the wall they’ve hung up some decor that ties in other shades of blue. The selection of polaroids they’ve hung up to the right side of the bed reflect a blue gradient while the poster hanging directly behind the bed mostly sticks to two different shades of blue.

New Bohemia
Boho Dorm Decor Inspired by @herzenstimme
We’re not sure that boho is ever going to go out of style! It’s been pretty trendy for a few years now, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be slowing down anytime soon. If you’ve thought about bringing a boho look to your dorm room this fall but haven’t been quite sure how you can bring it to life, look no further! Boho is all about combining your personal style with materials that are chic and organic.
Here, they’ve stuck to a fairly neutral color palette, which you may or may not choose to ascribe to, but they’ve made it boho by incorporating in lots of patterns and textures. While the sheets to their bedding are a fairly simple beige cotton, they’ve topped their bedding with a thickly knit handmade blanket and accent pillows with varying textures and patterns. You can see that some have bold geometric patterns while others stick to simple stripes, and some are made of a fairly basic canvas material while others are super fluffy.

Get Back to the Basics
Minimalist Dorm Decor Inspired by @elisaale
That’s right: minimalism is still in. While it’s not necessarily the easiest thing to keep your minimalist dorm decor looking, well, minimal while you’re living on a college campus, it’s not impossible - and it may just turn out to be one of your best decisions to date! Minimalist looks are simple, clean, and really help you to cut down on the clutter that is sure to invade your life after a few weeks of classes.
Here, they’ve stuck with a classic marker of minimalism when it comes to designing a minimalist bedroom: the sheets are white, the comforter is white, and the pillows are white. They’ve broken the mold a little bit by also bringing in a white accent pillow with a pop of color in the form of potted cactuses, but it really ties the room together when placed next to the ivy they’ve strung from the ceiling. On the wall, they have a simple collage of photos, and that’s about all they’ve brought to this dorm room look.

Colors to Earn Compliments
Complementary Color Dorm Decor Inspired by @missmirandarose
Colors you’ve just thrown together willy nilly? Out. Colors that have been specifically determined to work well together based on color theory, however...now those are in! According to color theory, if you really want to design a dorm room that looks more put-together than the graduation party your parents threw together for you this summer, you should put together a color palette that combines colors directly opposite of each other on the color wheel because these are the most complementary.

Here, they’ve chosen to combine orange and blue, and since the orange leans towards being on the russet side of orange hues, they’ve paired it with a pale pastel blue that really helps to highlight their contrast even more. The sheets and comforter in this particular bedding are orange, making it the more dominant color in this look, while the black and light blue throw blanket and pillow they’ve added act as more of an accent color.
You deserve to start the school year with a dorm room that really reflects just how you see yourself. Give yourself that look this fall by tapping in to some of the best current trends dorm rooms have to offer.
